We know about the Delhi Sultanate because of their architecture, inscriptions, coins, and tarikh/tawarikh (histories written in Persian, the official langiage of the Delhi Sultanate).
The authors of tawarikh were learned men, secretaries, administrators, poets, and courtiers who wrote about things and events in the Delhi Sultanate. And they mostly wrote very nice things, so that they could get rewards from the sultans. They also advised rulers on just governance (equality for all) and on the principles of birthright and gender distinctions.
In 1236, Sultan Iltutmish’s daughter, Raziyya, became the Sultana because she was more able and qualified than her brothers. But she was removed from the throne in 1240 because the nobles did not want a female ruling them.
