Food security in a country means ensuring that there is enough food and is made available to the people of a country. This action is the responsibility of the government to see that its people do not live with hunger. It is legislated in many countries including USA and India.

In 2013 Government of India passed National Food Security Act 2013.  This gives the people a Right to Food as a fundamental right in the constitution. Government of India introduced in 1975 Integrated Child development services for children and mothers.  It was discontinued in 1978.  But it is resumed in 2013 again.

In 2013 in Tamilnadu, initiated Amma Unavagam Canteens all over Chennai and Tamilnadu to provide food at very cheap rates. Maharashtra started a grain bank and holds buffer stock.  There is a mid day free meal scheme provided by state governments and central government for government schools. UP government passed a food bill in 2013 to make available extra food from parties to poor people.

In order to provide food to all people, the government ensures production of various grain crops and vegetables during the year. Government acquires food grains necessary from internal or foreign sources as necessary.

Government also subsidizes grains and essential food items for poor (BPL Below Poverty Line) people. It is done through acquiring buffer food stocks , storing them in Godowns and distributing them each month through the PDS - public distribution system.  PDS has retail dealers all over India. They distribute food to poor people with valid ration cards.

Whenever National calamities occur, government makes emergency arrangements to distribute food to the affected and dislocated people.

There are many voluntary organizations which provide services to bring extra food from restaurants and hotels to poor orphans. Many cooperative societies in India like Amul and Mother Dairy have taken care of distribution of milk, food and vegetables to people at reasonable rates. Raithu Bazaar in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh allows farmers to sell their produces directly at very cheap rates.  This is a very ideal government scheme, as fresh vegetables and fruits, are made available to people on daily basis.

hello Pankaj

What is food Security
Food Security is the state in which a person get access to the nutritional food in a sufficient quantities. The term "sufficient quantities" is a relative term, because the sufficient quantity varies from person to person.

Food Security in India is ensured by the GOVT of INDIA. There is an act called "right to food act" or NATIONAL FOOD SECURITY ACT, 2013.
This is an act passed by the Govt in which Govt ensures that the 1.2 billion (125 crore approx) people of India get the sufficient quantity of Nutritional food. According to this act food is provided to the people on the subsidized rate.

e.g. You may posses a ration card or you might heard about the PDS (Public Distribution system). Here people below the poverty line can purchase the food grains on the subsidized rates.

In PDS an individual person is entitled to get 5kg of cereals for a month.

hope it helps
