Sugarcane is a tropical plant, therefore, requires a year warm weather to reach maturity. The areas having temperature of 20° to 26°C and an average rainfall of 150 cm are suitable for its cultivationIn many areas water is partly supplemented by the canals. Much sunshine is required, particularly at the end of the growing season, to produce cane with high sugar content.
Sugarcane grows well in alluvium and light-clay soil. Moist clay-loam with good drainage is the best soil for cane. As the crop is a valuable one large amount of fertilizers are used to increase the yield. Sugarcane cultivation also needs sufficient capital and labour.

The favourable conditions for the growth of sugarcane are :

ii) Rainfall : Sufficient water is needed for growth of sugarcane and thus a rainfall of 100-150 cm is required
iii) Land : Well drained sloping land is suitable for sugarcane cultivation.
iv) Soil : Sugarcane grows best in fertile loamy soil, black soil and alluvial soil. It does not grow on alkaline soil.
v) Labour : It is a labour intensive method of cultivation. So labourers are needed for cultivation of sugarcane.
