There are several species of plants that are reported to produce Natural rubber. But till nowHevea brasiliensis is the only species successfully grown allover the world and used for producing Natural rubber which is used in Tyre Industries.
Hevea brasiliensis
In general, Rubber is a tropical tree. This explains why the leading Natural rubber producers are Thailand, Malaysia, India, Brazil and some African countries.
In general, it requires high temperature through out the year between 20–30°C. In some cases (younger trees), rubber trees can withstand a low temperature of around 15°C for a short period of time. An average rainfall of above 200cm is necessary for the latex tree cultivation. Rainfall of about 300cm might cause some kind of leaf diseases. Rainfall should be distributed uniformly throughout the year.
High humidity of 60–80% is beneficial for the rubber tree cultivation.
Here you can find the optimum climatic conditions for rubber tree cultivation in India recommended by Rubber board of India after carrying out several research.
Rainfall of 2000 to 3000 mm evenly distributed without any marked dry season and with 125 to 150 rainy days per annum.Maximum temperature of about 29°C to 34°C and minimum of about 20°C or more with a monthly mean of 25 to 28°C.High atmospheric humidity of the order of 80%.Bright sunshine amounting to about 2000 h per annum at the rate of 6 h per day through all the months.Absence of strong winds.
Only a few regions in India meet all these requirements. Fortunately rubber can be grown successfully under moderately deviating conditions too.
Rubber board of India has recently following new techniques to grow rubber trees in non-traditional rubber growing areas in India (hinterlands of coastal Karnataka, Goa, Konkan Region of Maharashtra, hinterlands of coastal Andhra Pradesh and Orissa, the northeastern states, Andaman and Nicobar Islands etc).
Recently, Natural rubber obtained from Russian Dandellion has been reported to give latex of same quality of Hevea brasiliensis. Still the process of latex extraction and other factors of tree growth has not revealed and kept secret. But these plants are said to be grown in kazhakstan and Uzbekistan. There are also test being conducted for the possibility of growing these trees in Belgium, Netherland, New Zealand (Non tropical climatic regions).
There has been reports of several other plant species which can be used to produce Natural rubber, but till now most of them are in research stage only.
Rubber board of India (Government organisation) has been very active in increasing the rubber plantation in India. If you are interested in rubber cultivation, you can contact with the Rubber board to get more information regarding the rubber cultivation in your areas/land.
