Karnataka is classified physically in four divisions - Central Plateau of Karnataka, Northern plateau, Southern Plateau and Coastal plateau of Karnataka.

The landscape of Karnataka has four physical divisions -

i) Northern Plateau - It has consisted of Bidar, Bijapur, Gulbarga and Belgaum district. It has black soil in this area and an elevated landscape of 300-600 metre;

ii) Central Plateau - It is consisted of Bellary, Chitradurga, Chikmagalur and some other districts and has an elevation of 450-700 metres;

iii) Southern plateau - It includes urban Bangalore, Hassan, Kodagu and many other districts with a 600-900 metre elevation.

iv) Coastal Region - It starts from western part of Western Ghat to eastern portion of Karnataka Plateau. It has Uttara and Dakshina Karnataka district in it.
