In the experiment Davidson and Garmer shot a beam of electrons at a nickel bar which acted as a slit and then examined the light spots on screen behind the nickel bar. To their surprise the light pattern formed by the electrons was a diffraction pattern like those formed by photons ( light beams) and water waves.
