Causes of depletion of forests in India.
1) Human beings get wood, barks, leaves, rubber, medicines, dyes, gum etc from the forests. So, we have ourselves depleted the our forest wealth.
2) The greatest damage done to the forests was during the British rule, when the colonial people used our forests excessively due to the expansion of agriculture, railway, commercial and scientific forestry and mining activities.
3) Even after independence, we used our forests by clearing the forest land for conversion into agricultural land because of our growing population.
4) Major parts of the forests land in the North eastern and Central India have been deforested by the tribal living in that area for shifting cultivation.
5) Lots of forest land has been cleared for river valley projects in India. Like for Narmada Valley Project and Tehri Dam Project.
