Answer: Maratha empire was an early modern era empire in the Maharashtra region of modern India.

Explanation: Maratha empire was feudal in character. Wherein, multiple sardars or nobility provided military and logistical support to the Maratha chief in exchange for jurisdiction over revenue of certain areas of the empire.

For example: Malhar Holkar of Malwa, Tanaji Malusare of Snghad etc.

Merits:

1) Saved the expenses of a large standing army

2) Decentralized administration under the sardars provided for ease in better decision making.

3) Kept the empire protected against minor revolts and excursions.

Demerits:

1) Since the support was pledged in exchange for material benefits, the sardars used to pledge support to other kingdoms, such as Adilshahi, and Nizamshahi. Thus, weakening the Maratha empire

2) Constant feuds and battles among the sardars prevented coming together in the face of the incoming enemies. For example, a major cause of loss against the British in the Anglo-Maratha war was the lack of unity among the sardars.
