THE METHOD OF DETERMINING THE MASS OF A PLANET:

• To begin, we must calculate the Earth's mass. The attraction between two objects is proportional to the product of their masses divided by the square of the distance between their centers of mass, according to Isaac Newton's Law of Universal Gravitation.
• We assume their geographic centers represent their centers of mass in order to get a decent approximation.
• We can calculate the mass of the Earth in terms of the gravitational force on an item (its weight) at the Earth's surface using the Law of Universal Gravitation and the radius of the Earth as the distance since we know the radius.
