Mention the new social movements that have been a result of opposition to multipurpose river projects in India. Why did they oppose these projects ?
Answers
There has been a number of protest movements in India related to rivers. They have opposed the river projects because such projects made problems with displacement and harmed the nature.
The two most famous protest movements against river projects were, Narmada Bachaao Andolan by Medha Patekar and the Tehra Dam andolan. Both were immensely successful.
“Save Narmada Movement” and “Tehri Dam Andolan” are the new social movements that have been a result of opposition to multipurpose river project in India. Resistance to these projects has primarily been due to the large – scale displacement of local communities. Local people often had to give up their land, livelihood and their meager access and control over resources for the greater good of the nation.
