Answer: The author thought that after returning from his abroad studies (after 5 years ) he might not see his grandmother anymore , but when he returned from his studies he saw his grandmother in station who was there to pick him up . She did not look a day older and when she clasped him in her arms he heard the prayers and thought that still she had no time for words because she was reciting her prayers . On that day also her happiest moments were with the sparrows whom she fed .
In the evening a change came over her . She did not pray and instead of that she collected all the neighbourhood woman , got an old drum and started singing . For several hours she thumped those old drums and sang the home coming of warriors ( that was devoted to her grandson because he has won the battle of studies and returned back home ) . She had to be persuaded too stop because these things might overstrain her . This was the first time the author saw her that she did not pray .
Next morning she was taken to the hospital because she became ill . It was a mild fever , the doctor said and he told everyone that it will go , but grandmother took this differently and told everyone that she is approaching towards her end and that during her last hours of her life she has omitted to prayer and now she does not wants to talk to anybody but to recite her prayers . Everybody protested about her thought but she ignored all of them . She was in the bed laying peacefully and was reciting her prayers and was telling her rosary beads. Even before anybody could suspect , her lips stopped moving and the rosary beads fell from her lifeless hands and a peaceful pale expression was spread in her face and everybody knew that she was dead.
