The excretory system consists of a pair of Kidneys, renal pelvis, ureters, urinary bladder and urethra.

The kidneys take in blood and purify the contents of it by eliminating waste matter such as urea, excess salts and water.

Explanation:

Anatomy of kidney

Kidney is parted as cortex, the outer most layer and medulla, the inner layer. The kidney consists about a million  nephrons in each kidney, which purify blood which is then sent to the heart. Each nephron is a complicated structure which filters the blood separating necessary salts and other waste by-products.

Nephrons

Nephrons are the functioning the structures of a kidney. they responsible for blood purification.  It is further divided into four major parts namely:

• The Renal Corpuscle

It consists of the Glomerulus and the Bowman’s Capsule, where the filtration process begins. Protein present in blood is reabsorbed into the blood and rest of the fluid, called capsular urine moves into the renal tubes.

Renal tubes are the Proximal Convoluted tubules, Henry’s loops and the Distal Convoluted tubules.

• The Proximal Convoluted Tubule (PCT)

The essentials such as sodium, glucose and water are reabsorbed into the blood.

• The Henry’s Loop

Here salts such as chloride, potassium and sodium are absorbed by the blood.

• The Distal Convoluted Tubule (DCT)

It further absorbs sodium and removes acids, leaving the fluid with mainly urea and other by-products of metabolism.

The fluid is now called urine and leaves through renal pelvis and enters ureters to finally leave the body through the urethra.
