Urine formation takes place in nephrons (structural and functional unit of kidney).
There are three basic steps that are involved in urine formation-
1.Ultrafiltration-The filtration of blood that occurs in glomerulus (tuft of capillaries) is called glomerular filtration. Except plasma proteins and blood cells, all the blood components are filtered by the kidneys. This occurs due to very high pressure of blood in glomerulus.
2.Tubular reabsorption-Substances such as glucose, amino acids, sodium ions are actively reabsorbed. Reabsorption of water occurs passively. Proximal and distal convoluted tubule, loop of henle and collecting duct takes part in this process.
3.Tubular secretion- Substances such as ammonia, hydrogen and potassium ions are secreted into the filtrate. This step plays an important role in maintenance of acid and ionic balance of body fluids.
Urine formed in the kidney is passed through ureter and stored in urinary bladder from where it can expel out when needed.
