While making large concrete floors or roads the floor is prepared in sections. Suitable substances are put in the gaps between the sections in order to let the settled concrete expand.
Concrete can withstand only compressive stress. It cannot withstand tensile stress. Tensile means that a material is under tension because forces are acting on it and trying to stretch it. The ultimate tensile stress or breaking stress refers to the maximum stress a material can stand before it breaks.

Concrete floors are always prepared in sections and the concrete pieces are kept at certain distance apart from each other. The reason is that when the concrete gets dry, its molecules expands and needs some space for adjustment. So, if there is not enough space between the concrete sections then its molecules could not find enough space to expand and as a result, concrete floors may get cracked.
