Gametes are cells of specialized sex containing haploid number of chromosomes. These are produced from gonads and are two types - male and female. Gametes are always haploid in nature. These gametes will fuse together to form a zygote. This process of fusion of both male and female gametes is called fertilization. Since it is a fusion of gametes , it is also called syngamy. Fertilization can either be external or internal depending on where does they occur
