Given:

Orbitals have been filled in the following order:

1s² 2s⁰ 2p⁶

To find:

Which rule has been deviated during orbital filling ?

Solution:

First of all , let me directly remind you the RULE from which it is deviated :

  • AUFBAU PRINCIPLE

Aufbau principle states that electron filling in the ground state of an atom will occur first in the lower energy orbitals before an higher energy orbital.

So, 1s orbital should be filled before 2s orbital and again 2s orbital should be filled before 2p orbital.

However , in the question , 2p has 6 electrons filled before 2s. Hence Aufbau principle has been deviated.

With the same number of electrons, the correct filling should have been:

1s² 2s² 2p⁴ ............(correct filling)
