moving a magnet near a wire will induce a current in the wire that will create a magnetic field that will oppose the motion of the magnet. It is an extension of conservation of energy and is usefulfor finding the direction of the current in the wire described above. If it worked the opposite way and helped the magnet it would be creating energy from nothing.
The magnetic field caused by the current in the wire opposes the motion of the magnet, which is causing the current in the first place.
