The northern plains in general and Punjab in particular is the wheat bowl of India.The Northern Plains are important to India because of the following reasons:

(а) Extremely fertile and good for crops.

(b) Rivers are navigable throughout the year,

(c) Flat land- good for roads and railways,

(d) Irrigational facilities.

(e) For construction of H.E.P. Plants.
