Under the British rule, the following was the state of the agricultural sector of India:

  1. There was exponential growth of the land area under cultivation.
  2. Several forest regions and pastures for grazing were converted into agricultural lands. This lead to the loss of various indigenous and medically valuable species.
  3. Coarse grains like bajra,etc. were replaced by wheat and rice as well as commercially valuable crops like indigo.
  4. More important was given to increasing agricultural produce then conserving or maintaining the environmental resources like land, forests and water. This resulted in soil erosion, land degradation, water pollution due to it being mixed with extensive fertilizers and pesticides and water overuse to support indigo cultivation.
