The leaders of the opposition in both the houses of Parliament i.e. Loksabha and Rajyasabha were given statuary recognition  in 1977.

The opposition provides constructive criticism to the government policies.

The MoPs who are in opposition gets same salaries and allowances equivalent to a cabinet minister.

To become the leader of the opposition, the single largest party in the opposition must have atleast 10% seats in Lok Sabha.
