After the death of
the albatross, the ancient sailor had to face the criticism of his fellow
sailors. They believed the death of the auspicious bird would bring them
ill-luck. However, they changed their views when the ship entered a wholesome
climatic zone. The fickle-minded sailors praised him for killing the albatross
as they suspected it was on account of it they had faced difficulties at the
South Pole. The sailor was again in trouble when the ship got stuck in the
silent sea near equator. The intense heat was unbearable. Soon the provisions
ran out. Their survival was at stake. Each crew member held the sailor
responsible for their troubles. They punished him by hanging the dead albatross
round his neck.

The ancient mariner shot the albatross with his cross bow without any reason. This wanton act of the mariner brought a host of problems for him. The other sailors changed their views about the righteousness of his act. Whereas first they called it a 'hellish thing', when the weather became stable they commented that it was right to kill that bird as it brought mist and snow. The moment they said it, they implicate in the sin of the ancient mariner. It started becoming hot and the wind stopped blowing. The ship couldn't move and the sea started rotting 'with slimy things on the slimy sea.' One of the sailors dreams that they had been chased by the spirit causing them all the suffering. The other sailors held him responsible for their misery and hanged the albatross around his neck to remind him of his guilt.
