BRENTWOOD — A new offer by former San Francisco 49ers offensive lineman Jeremy Newberry for helpful information did not generate any new leads into a Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office investigation over why his cherry farm was devastated last week, an official said.

Newberry, a two-time Pro Bowler who also starred for Antioch High, doubled the original offer from $5,000 to $10,000 for information that leads to finding those responsible for the damage to his farm in an unincorporated part of this city. But a sheriff’s office official said Monday afternoon that the increased reward generated barely a ripple.

“We haven’t received any new tips,” Lt. Matt Foley said. “This happened at night, in an area where it’s very dark, roads are deserted. It’s in a very rural area.”

About 2,000 18-inch-tall cherry trees on Newberry’s farm were “pulled up from the roots” in the early morning hours of May 14, and “many of them were snapped in half,” Foley said.

Newberry estimated the financial damages to be at $25,000 and told this news organization that he thinks it was a personal attack — someone or a group of people with a “vendetta” against him.

He said had planted the trees about six weeks ago on his property — which he purchased within the past year — and that half of the 4,100 trees he had planted were destroyed.

“It had to be multiple people, it would have taken one person 7 or 8 hours,” Newberry said.

Authorities have not named any suspects, and Foley said the sheriff’s office investigation has not uncovered a motive for the crime.

Newberry asks anyone with information about the incident to call 925-766-6756. Two calls to that number by this news organization Monday went unanswered, and messages could not be left.
