Xylem helps the plant to transport water from the roots to up to the shoots and phloem helps to transport food and other materials that are produced in the leaves to all the parts of the plant.Xylem dont require energy to transport water because the water is pulled upwards by the transportational pull, like you suck water through a pipe.When the leaves loose water through transpiration,there generates a space in the leaves ,it creates a pull which pulls the water up and the water fills the space emptied .But phloem requires energy to transport the food materials all over the plant.
