The rib cage has three important functions: protection, support and respiration.It is flexible and can expand and contract by the action of the muscles of respiration. The diaphragm is attached to it's lower border. The bones of the rib cage are the sternum, the 12 thoracic vertebrae and the 12 pairs of ribs

there are 3 types of rib breathing

Seven ribs which connect directly to the sternum (1-7)

Three ribs which connect to the costal cartilages of the rib above (8-10)

Two "floating" ribs which connect only at the back (11&12)
