In urban circles, the term used is ‘community’ not ‘caste’. So, people can either find out about another person’s caste by their surname or caste markers, or they can simply ask that person about their community. ‘What community do you belong to?’ is a very common question in India.

When we go to small towns and rural areas, things become much more obvious. There, caste is called caste, or if it’s called community, no one bothers to deny that they’re really talking about caste. Why would they? They see nothing wrong in it.

Caste is still a dominant system of Indian society that can be seen in the much prevalent practice of waiting for Brahmins to inaugurate and conduct the actual pujas during Indian festivals.

Another example is the upper caste landowners exploiting the lower caste farmers as the landowners think its their right to do so.

Explanation:

  • Ancient India was known for its dominant practice of caste system, and much action and awareness have been spread from then till today to stop the practice of caste system.
  • However, though the caste system is abolished and not followed in today’s India, due to centuries of conditioning, the present-day Indians subconsciously follow the norms of caste.
  • This can be witnessed in seeing that priests are mainly brahmins and till today, for any pujas to be held at homes, only brahmins are called to perform the same.
