here are some differences between the Civil Services of British India and independent India. The Civil Services in British period was named as Imperial Civil Services. After independence in !947 it was renamed as Indian Civil Services. The recruitment was done in London for the Imperial Civil Services. But after independence the recruitment was done in Delhi. The Imperial Civil Services was conducted by Department of State of British Government up to 1935. But after 1935 as per Government of India Act the recruitment was conducted by Federal Public Service Commission. After independence the recruitment was conducted by Union Public Service Commission. In the year 1919 the Imperial Civil Services were divided into two groups as All India Services and Central Cervices. The All India Services included Imperial Administrative Service, Imperial Police Service and Imperial Forest Service. The Central Services included Audits and Accounts Service, Postal Service and Railway Service. But after independence the All India Services were renamed as Indian Administrative Service, Indian Police Service and Indian Forest Service. The Central Services were expanded and new services like Indian Foreign Service, Indian Revenue Service and Defence Accounts Service . In the British period the highest post occupied by an Indian Civil Servant was the post of Governor of a province. After independence the highest post is Cabinet Secretary for the Indian Administrative Service cadre. There is difference in salary for these officers before independence and after independence. In the British time some ICS officers functioned as judge of district courts and High Courts. But after independence judicial recruitment was separated from Civil Service recruitment. Other differences are also there in some cases.
