1.Building large dams would require bigger land which may lead to clearance of greater forest area hence hitting the bidodiversity of that particular area.

2.Larger dams would require more maintainance cost.

3.As there is no scientific method of measuring the quantity of water in the reservoirs so during the time of pre monsoon and monsoon some extra care needs to be given to measure the water level or else it may lead to large discharge of water causing floods as it did in Kerela last year.

P.S.-I know that it was physics question and I am not a physic student but still I tried to give an answer as this is my first answer.I hope it will help ya!

Answer:

Disadvantages of dams are-

(a) Deforestation- It causes loss of biological diversity (plants, animals and microbes) leads to many environmental problems like water logging, earth quakes etc.

(b) Displacement- Displacement of large number of peasants and tribal without enough compensation or rehabilitation lead to many social problems.

(c) Water-logging and Salinization- Canals drawn out from dams causes the problems of water-logging and salinization within years in dry and half dry sandy areas.
