1.Bombay was an important administrative city under the British. As a centre of government, it attracted a significant number of people who worked in government.

2.Bombay is a port city and was an important trading city under the British. A lot of workers involved in the sea trade migrated to Bombay. For example, large number of workers were needed to load and unload goods from ships in the docks. Demand for such workers increased migration.

3.By the end of the nineteenth century, Bombay became a major industrial centre. Due to growing trade in commodities like cotton and opium, large communities of traders, bankers, artisans and shopkeepers migrated to and settled in the city.

4.With the opening of cotton textile mills in Bombay, a large number of workers started migrating to the city.

5.In the twentieth century, Bombay became India's premier industrial and financial centre. As the centre of the film and entertainment industries, it became the "city of dreams". With such a diverse array of economic activities, Bombay became a magnet attracting people from all over the country.
