Assam is also called the ’problem state’ due to various problems in this state that happens in daily basis like natural calamities, geographical issues, no proper functioning of law and order and many more factors.

Explanation-

Problems of economic development in Assam are:

  • Hasty growth of population – In Assam the population is growing very rapidly. The growth of population is becoming a liability more than being an asset. Assam has the highest demographic growth rate in the whole country according to the survey done. 53.26 percentage of growth has been seen over last two decades in Assam. Unemployment, poverty and low income or inequality of income becomes the major factor in the growth of population and low wealth.
  • Natural calamities Floods and droughts hit Assam every now and then with that many other calamities also take place. The river Brahmaputra and its various tributaries cause floods frequently. Assam faces a whole lot of damage like their crops, homes, public places everything is affected and it increases everytime. Therefore due to a huge erosion caused by the river Brahmaputra the state faces a huge loss in economic development. The revenue for the flood relief has had been increased a lot over the years. Therefore we can say a lump sum amount from the state’s fund goes towards flood reliefs and repairs every year.
  • Shortage of skilled workforces – Assam suffers from the lack of skilled employees. Labourers in Assam are unskilled and therefore the state has to rely upon the other states to send skilled artisans. And those who come from other states demand more pay. The state has raised costs for development projects and has made the incubation periods lengthy as technicians are imported from outside.
