The three salient features of the trend of population growth in India are :
(a) First phase (1901-1921) : The rate of growth was negligible due to high birth and high death rates.
The growth rate declined from 5.75% in 1901-1911 to 0.31% in 1911-1921 mainly due to deaths in wars and epidemics.
(b) Second phase (1921-1951) : This phase had moderate but steady growth rate at over 1° 0. . It was due to declln'e in death rate. There was improvement in health care facilities.
(c) Third phase (1951-2001) : Growth rate has been rapid, over 2° 0. It was due to rapid decline in death rate but birth rate remained high.
