The main features of Mahalwari system were -

Division of land into villages or group of villages controlled by Zamindars.

The Landlords were given the responsibility of paying taxes to the British. They dealt with British officers on behalf of villagers.

Mahalwari system was practised in UP, North Western provinces, central parts of India and Punjab.
