The two methods, which produce very pure metals are electrolytic reduction and smelting.

  • In the electrolytic method, two electrodes that are anode and cathode are used with an electrolyte between them and metal is purified by electrolysis.
  • In this method reduction of oxides or chlorides of metal is performed using electricity and metal is obtained at the cathode. metal undergo electrolytic reduction are Na, k, Ca and Al etc.
  • Smelting is also a reduction process. iron is reduced by smelting. in this process metal, flux is added to the blast furnace at high temperature and after a series of reactions pure metal is obtained because side products are gaseous.
