- The area lost fertility due to climate change, and people were forced to move elsewhere.

- Constant use of firewood for the production of bricks induced deforestation and decreased the rainfall.

- The normal life was adversely affected by natural calamities such as earthquake and cyclones.

- Many scholars believe that because of attacks by the hostile tribes and the Aryans, the Harappan civilization experienced a decline. M. Wheeler states that the city of Indus was devastated by the invading Aryans. The Rig-Veda also supported this view.

  • Flood is one of the reasons for the decline. The point is supported by the evidence of silt clay that covered the houses that are ruined.

  • Scattered skeletal remains in the ruins are evidence to an epidemic. However, historians suggest outburst of plague during the later phases.
  • There is a proof of unburied scattered skeleton everywhere. Research states that the death might have caused due to sharp objects likely iron weapons. The invasion of Aryans is yet another theory related to its decline.
