1. When we chew food, saliva is produced by the salivary glands which moisten food and helps in digestion of starch.  2. When we swallow food, the tongue presses backwards and upward, which forces food into the pharynx. The epiglottis closes the opening of windpipe which prevents entry of food into the windpipe.
