In India, people elect their representation through direct and indirect elections.
1. Direct Election: The citizens themselves elect their representatives through votes. Members of the Lok Sabha and State legislative assemblies are elected in this manner.
2. Indirect Election: The citizens do not directly take part in the election. The elected representatives are the voters here. The members of the Rajya Sabha, the president and vice-president are elected in this manner.
By-Elections: By elections held when an elected candidate from a constituency dies or resigns from the parliament of the state legislatures. Under these circumstances elections will be held only in those constituencies. Such elections are called by-elections.
Mid-term polls: Some times it happens that the parliament or the state legislatures do not function for the whole period of five years for various reasons. Then they are dissolved and election and are held. These elections are called the mid-term polls.
