Bacteria like Rhizobium, Nitrosomonas convert Nitrogen into Ammonium ions, which can be used by the plants through the soil.
PHYSICALLY:
Lightning converts Nitrogen into Ammonia and Nitrate that gets fixed in the soil along with rain.
