We already have cells that are approaching the maximum efficiency. But these are very expensive to produce. However, there are still many ways left to increase the efficiency of less efficient cell, or decrease the coast of some of more efficient cells. Coast is the big factor in how competitive solar can be in the industry, so reducing coast while maintaining efficiency is also something people are working on.
