Scene between Salanio Salarino Antonio Gratiano Bassanio And Lorenzo. Antonio is in a melancholic mood. Antonio is worried about his Argosies also known as ships. There is no sign of his ships which a richly laden with goods and spices. Gratiano being the talkative one tries to make him happy and says that in the world every man has to play a role and to this Antonio says that his role is a sad one. Bassanio talks about Portia and how he is going to woo her and attain her love. He wants to lend some money from Antonio but Antonio says that he does not have such a big amount at that time and while his ships are at the sea he does not have that much money so he gave an idea to Bassanio that he may lend money on the behalf of Antonio's name.
