merchant of Venice act 2 scene 4
Answers
This scene opens with a host of minor characters talking about the masque. However, their plan does not sound very convincing. Soon, Launcelot comes by with the news of Shylock being invited to a feast and also hands over Jessica’s letter to Lorenzo. Things start falling into place. Jessica is more than willing to elope with Lorenzo, who in turn is also happy. He tells Gratiano that they have found a torch bearer.
This scene is important because:
a) It puts the minor characters to good use. They provide crucial information and help Lorenzo and Jessica elope.
b) It gives the lovers enough time to plan an escape and adds to the complexity of the plot.
c) It contributes to the humour to the play. Lorenzo’s thinking that Jessica will not be punished by God because of stealing from her father, but will be punished simply because of being Shylock’s daughter is a funny preposition.
d) It shows Jessica’s willingness to be with Lorenzo.
e) It throws light on what the commoners thought about Shylock.
