The quality of mercy cannot be forced. It is should be given like the drops of gentle rain from heaven to the earth. The person who offers mercy and the person who receives it will be blessed. It the most powerful weapon that the most powerful men have. Mercy is a nobler quality in a king than the crown he wears. His sceptre shows the force of earthly power which is the main attribute of a king who commands power and grandeur. The sceptre instills fear and dread in the subjects but Mercy is far above this worldly power. It is deep-rooted in the hearts of kings. It is a quality that belongs to god himself. Mercy and Justice should be present in equal quantities. Therefore, Shylock I know Justice is what you’re pleading for but consider this. If we were to be judged according to the strict justice of god, then none of us will attain salvation. We all pray for mercy and it is this prayer that teaches us all to give mercy. I have spoken too much to soften your demand. If you follow the penalty then we must sentence the merchant to his death.
