Bassanio is a young gentleman who who is Antonio's best friend. He is a very extravagant man who has been living beyond his means on borrowed money by Antonio. he is a self-proclaimed fortune hunter who leaves an impression of a no good fellow out to take advantage of his generous friend but as things turn out he proves that he is as devoted to Antonio as Antonio is to him. In the very first scene, he requested Antonio for more money as he desired to try his luck at winning the hand of Portia, a wealthy, beautiful and intelligent lady from Belmont. Antonio Antonio reminds him that all his money is tied up merchandise that is still at sea but assures him that he will be willing to borrow money for Bassanio if he can find a money lender. therefore Bassanio asks Shylock to lend him money. He is is a better judge of character than his friend Antonio for while the latter immediately agrees to sign the bond proposed by Shylock, Bassanio suspects suspects Shylock for a conspiracy. Although, he is not a wise person, he shows surprising wisdom in choosing the lead casket and succeeds in marrying Portia. when he hears of Antonio's misfortunes, he offers himself in place of Antonio for the penalty and is willing to pay double the amount in order to redeem Antonio of the pledge and proofs his love for him.
