Answers
In the Merchant of Venice, Portia is the lover and wife of Bassanio.
Introduction
Bassinio's friend Antonio had borrowed money from Shylock, a cruel money lender. But Antonio could not return the money in time and had to face the trial. He had signed an agreement, which permitted Shylock to remove a pound of flesh from his body on his failure. So Bassanio married Portia in a hurry and left for Venice to help his friend.
Pretext of Portia
On that night, Portia handed over the management of her house to her servant Lorenzo Lorenzo in the pretext that she was going to spend her time in prayer and solace in a monastery nearby, till her husband returns.
But actually Portia wanted to support her husband in helping Antonio. So Portia was going to Venice disguised as a man, named Balthazar, a lawyer's apprentice, to win the trial of Antonio against Shylock.
After winning the case and saving Antonio she had to return home before her husband, because she had not revealed her disguise to her husband.
