Mercuric oxide is a compound and when it is heated, it decomposes to form mercury and oxygen which are two different elements. Mercury is a liquid metal which is poisonous while oxygen is a light colourless gas which is lighter than mercury.

Hope it helps:)

Solution :

Mercuric oxide : It is a compound because it splits up into simpler substances mercury and oxygen.

Mercury : It is an element because it cannot be further decomposed into simpler substances.

Oxygen : It is also an element because it cannot be further decomposed into simpler substances.

Hope it helps....

Thank you
