At eastern elongation, Mercury and Venus are seen in the evening sky as evening stars because they appear to follow the Sun in its daily motion across Earth's sky owing to the rotation of the Earth (Fig. 1-2). At western elongation, they are ahead of the Sun and are seen as morning stars before sunrise.
