Mercury cannot be used to measure very low
temperatures. Instead, alcohol is used. Find out
why. Since alcohol is colourless, it is coloured
so that it can be seen in the stem.
Can someone help me????????

Answer:

Alcohol thermometers are used rather than mercury thermometers in very cold regions because alcohol has a lower freezing point than mercury. Pure ethanol freezes at -115 degrees C, while mercury freezes at -38 degrees C.

The alcohol thermometer or spirit thermometer is an alternative to the mercury-in-glass ... Since these are transparent, the liquid is made more visible. These include Ferdinando II de' Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany, who in 1654 made sealed tubes partly filled with alcohol or urine, with a bulb and stem.

Alcohol thermometers are used rather than mercury thermometers in very cold regions because alcohol has a lower freezing point than mercury. ... If it freezes it won't move in the tube, so a liquid must be used that has a freezing point that's lower than the temperature it's measuring.
