Boiling point increases with increase in pressure for liquids. This fact is utilised in makng mercury thermometers. A gas is filled in the tube for this purpose. As mercury expands, the gas is compressed to a smaller volume thereby increasing its pressure. Thus the pressure on mercury also increases, hence its boiling point increases. The gas has to be at high pressure.
The gas being filled should be relatively inert and not react chemically with mercury at high temperatures. The most commonly available of such gases is nitrogen. Therefore, nitrogen is used.
