Lets first talk in layman's language:Because mercury is much closer to the sun as compared to earth necessarily it has to cover shorter distance around the sun which will take lesser time(around 88 days)
-------------
Now getting into some detailed Stuff:
The phenomena that mercury takes only around 88 days of complete revolution around sun can be well explained by KEPLER'S LAW OF PERIODS which states that square of orbital period of planets is directly proportional to cube of semi major axis of its orbit(orbits are elliptical not circular also discovered by Kepler).Going by this law of periods as the semi major axis(distance of planet to the sun which is considered on focus of the elliptical orbit) of the mercury is smaller than rest other planets the period of revolution is also lesser.
The formula given is

T^2=[4(pi)^2/GM]*a^3
Putting the values with proper units you will get time period around 88 days.
