Add the expenses, not the amount, which is left after making the expense. There is no relation between amount spent and amount left.
For eg, I've 50 Rs, I've spent 40 on breakfast and 5 on some sweet. In this case, the left over amount is 10 and then 5 which adds up to 15, which actually has no relation with the total amount i had in the beginning i.e. Rs 50.
The above equation is formed in such a way, so that the remaining amount adds upto 51, just to confuse us. Thats it.
