Merit is not always reawared because intelligience is not important that you should have but you should have good manners and all the good quality that a good human being should possess . You will be a good human then and a respectable person . You should have patience and dont be happy if you gain a little knowlede as little knowledge is dangerous . Never be over confident as fire is a good slave but a bad master.

yes merit is not rewarded everytime because of the demerits of a specific man.if a person has a demerit than he must change it because one demerit can affect the life of a person.In the story the man who knew too much mr.private quelch was a knowledgable person and he knows everything about his profession and he learnt all the things by burning the midnight oil.but he has a demerit i.e overconfience in himself which led him to be in the kitchen of army but not having a commission in the army.so merit is not always rewarded as private quelch was not awarded due to his demerits.
