Merits and Demerits of Green Revolution

“Green revolution in India indeed has led to enhanced food grain production but at the cost of environmental pollution, land degradation, resource depletion, uniformity in biodiversity, pest resurgence and outbreak of mosquito borne diseases.”

The Green revolution mainly refers to the use of HYV seeds that was introduced in India to increase the production of the country. This Revolution was brought in oder to improve the contribution of the agriculture , which used to employ most of the people, to the GDP.It also included the use of fertilizers, pesticides and better crop rotation methods and better chemical for better results.

But, this also had it's demerits. The HYV seeds, pesticides and chemical fertilizers were expensive and most of the farmers couldn't afford it. Some also took loans and consequently fell under  huge debts.The fertility of the soil was also reduced and this Revolution was limited only to rice and wheat.
